Yuru Yuri season 1: Dessert, Reccomended

Yuru Yuri translates as "Happy Go Lilly," which is a perfect summation of what it is--what it tries to do, and what it accomplishes. "Lilly" in this case translates to "Yuri," which can imply girl's love. Actually, it pretty much defines girl's love. This is a sweet, sugary, happy, and chewy adventure of an anime that bars no holds against the teeth and that sweet portion of the brain. A perfect end to a very solid meal course, to keep that heavy depth away and satisfy that last bit of appetite.

That being, it's a dessert, and after a while it starts to taste very heavy, as if your mind is doused in sugary syrup. Watch out; this anime is to be imbibed with discretion. And yet it fits very well as an end to a magnificent course.

Fate/Zero: Main Dish, Reccomended

This anime hits hard with its solid substance and well-refined taste, but at the same time it draws the diner into a etherial world full of magic and intrigue. In other words, the perfect steak dinner. Perhaps if this anime were a steak, it would be a rare rib-eye with spicy steak sauce on the side.

However, it's not a steak. It's an anime, and that distinction is critical in this case--at some points, it really does feel as if this anime wants to be a sauteed or perhaps grilled hunk of cow flesh. Due to this, I can't reccomend this anime to those with a palette for something more wholesome, something more in the spirit of anime and "anime logic." The superpowers in this anime hit hard, leaving one with the aftertaste of spicy curry. Perhaps that curry tasted good. Perhaps it tasted bad. It's hard to tell because it's so spicy.

A good anime to watch right after finishing Natsu-iro Kiseki, or perhaps while watching it. The two animes compliment each other very well in their total opposition to each other in terms of narrative style masked in an almost identical cg-anime sauce. If you're looking for a filling piece with lots to give and lots to take, this is the anime for you.

Natsu-iro Kiseki: Appetizer, Reccomended

Natsu-iro kiseki. Light, uplifting friendship vibes, all female cast with no yuri undertones, and a dose of well-pulled off supernatural elements that don't detract from the story's immersion. All in all a nice appetizer.

One I reccomend if you're in a mood for something less meaty than Kokoro Connect, but at the same time not as comedic and lapsy-daisy as Yuru Yuri. The general feel is the same, however.

To talk about tongue feel--this anime brings a sense of fullness, of warmth, and at the same time reminds me of the days I spent during the summer playing around with my brothers, imagining things, using my creativity to make a whole world of imaginary things possible. Warmth and cheer and a wholesome sense of optimism stems from this anime's core. Each character gives the anime a slightly different spice; when combined all four girls interact in a way that is pleasant on the tongue but not too sugary-sweet to cause the feeling one gets when eating too much chocolate cake.

Easily digestible in a day or two, or just as easily palatable when stretched over a long period of time. However, it needs a follow-up with something heavy, because there isn't much in the way of fulfilling depth and weight. All in all an anime that I would reccomend to the diner looking for something light to fill in the gaps between the big courses.

Laying down the basics

This blog has one goal: get you acquainted with anime that you want to watch. Each and every anime I recommend I have watched in full. Most of the time, the shows I recommend will be much less prominent in the collective culture. I won't limit myself, but all of the animes I recommend will be at least in some way unique and out of the mainstream. I will recommend one anime each time I update my blog, three times a week. I won't go into history or review it--those kinds of things can be easily found. Here I direct you to myanimelist.net.

If you want to see everything I've watched, you can go to my anime list on the site of the same name, here. There you can find pretty much everything I have to say about all the anime shows that I have watched. All I'm doing in this blog is compiling and elucidating on my recommendations.

I don't have any "favorite animes." I'm not that kind of person. I like all the anime I finish; if I don't like it, I drop it.

Which leads me to another part of this blog, the other half. The anime shows I recommend against. All these will be shows that I have dropped, and I will explain why I dropped them. If you want to have a go at them, you can see for yourself.

A master list of anime that I have recommended will be on file on one of my pages.

I will judge animes by their feel, their texture, and their taste. No plot summaries, no normal reviews. There are three categories I will place shows in.

Appetizer.
'
These animes are light, fluffy, and generally something you can either binge on in one day or pick at for a while without losing anything. In other words. something to eat in between the big ones. These will include animes like Kokoro Connect, Baccano, and Durarara. They are selected for lightness without too much sweetness--just enough depth to whet the tongue.

Main Dish

These animes are meaty, full of potential, and include shows like Black Lagoon, Death Note, Fate/Zero, and Hunter X Hunter. They are selected for their depth, however that depth may manifest.

Dessert

This category includes most harem romances, most all-out comedy shows, and all types of fanservice shows whether that fanservice be sexual of violent. This includes animes like Naruto, One Piece, High School DXD, and Kaicho wa Maid-sama. These are the kind of shows that are consumed in huge quantities--the fast food ice cream of the anime world.

Special Category--A La Carte
Not many animes fall into this category, but each and every one of them is a meal in and of itself. An A La Carte anime must satisfy all three types of hunger at the same time or within the same show. Most of them will have other classifications as well--this is just the place where I put big-time animes that people can eat and then say "I'm full," without anything else.

Appetizer day is Monday. Main Dish day is Wednesday. Dessert day is Friday.

That's it. I hope you have fun watching the anime I recommend.

Sincerely, Zeppy the Anime Sommelier.
